Should I follow my head or my heart?

I am mutually attracted to this guy, and I feel that he truly cares for me. But my head's telling me not to go for it because he had a turbulent childhood with this family. So I'm afraid to go for it. I also feel that I wouldn't be true to him because I think I'm falling for him just because I'm lonely. So I'm very confused.
