What is the brownish looking stuff between the head and tail of crawfish (crayfish)? Is it feces?

I love eating crawfish (crayfish) but I've been wondering what the brownish looking stuff between the head and tail is when you separate the head and tail when eating them. Is it feces, and if so, is it safe to eat?
